This tool was designed to help people determine color choices for backgrounds and text. With six frames displayed simultaneously, you have ample opportunity to compare and contrast. Note that you can also choose colors for links against a given background, just enter that into the box for text. This is a fairly old tool, and there are a lot more sophisticated things available now (not in the least is Photoshop 5.5).
Each cell in the tool operates independently, and the present value of the background and text color is displayed for you in hexidecimal RGB format. There is also a frame containing a decimal to hex conversion. Enter a number in hex and then convert to decimal, or enter a number in decimal and then convert to hex. This is only set up for conversion for decimal numbers ranging from 0 to 255, and hex numbers ranging from 0 to FF. This is handy if you want to use a color wheel and it's giving you decimal versions, and you're too lazy to do the math. I've spent too many years studying and teaching mathematics not to give a brief explanation of decimal and hexidecimal. Don't be confused by the color conversion. You should know at least that for HTML purposes, color codes are given in RGB format, three hexidecimal numbers ranging from 00 to FF. The first two characters form the hex number for the red value; the second two characters form the hex number for the green value; and the last two make blue. So you could think of the color code 3C2200 as being 60 red, 34 green, and 0 blue.
Warning! The codes won't change. As soon as you reload the page, or close the browser box, your combinations will be lost. So write them down! Enjoy, and please email me any comments, questions, or suggestions that you might have.
